How do I create one-time setup fees for a product or service item in Square online store?

All tutorial videos show steps. But when I follow the steps to...Create service charge > then > Enable Apply automatically to Square Online orders. This option is grayed out and able to be selected. Does anyone know of a way to activate this feature or know of a workaround? ThanksScreenshot 2025-06-12 153939.png

Hi @BizBox360 - I see this is your first post in the Square Community so I'd like to officially welcome you! 🎉👏 My name is Violet, and I'm one of the Moderators here in the Square Community. I'm happy to provide you with some more information on using the Service Charge feature for Square Online 🙂

You can automatically apply the service charge to Square Online orders fulfilled via pickup, delivery, or QR code ordering. To do so, toggle on Apply automatically to Square Online orders and choose which fulfillment types you want the service charge to apply to. Please Note: Item-level taxes must be enabled for these fulfillment types before you can set up automatic service charges. I wonder if you're missing this step, and that's why the option is greyed-out 🤔

As @jgrgetich mentioned, Square does not support credit card surcharging at this time, but we are actively working on a network-compliant surcharging feature to give you more flexibility in how you manage your costs. The service charge feature cannot be used to add a credit card surcharge. This is because payment networks updated their rules around credit card surcharging, and surcharging is subject to local laws and regulations that apply to your business and must comply with card network rules, including notification requirements.

I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions.

I’m guessing you are naming it something you are not allowed to.  Square mentioned that a credit card surcharge was coming in the future, but right now it scans key words so you are not able to. However, just name it something else, like checkout fee.

Thank you for this. I finally called Square support if you want to call it that. Lol.  Anyway, turns out Square developer had to enable the toggle button to connect the items in the back end. Not sure why it was disabled but now it's working. Once again thank you for your help. Have a blessed day!
