Enable Tipping for Online Orders

Hi Guys,


I'm trying to setup tipping on Square Online (I do not have POS) but all the help I searched online doesn't seem to have any solution. Either it's too old or the instruction does not match what I'm seeing.

What I'm trying to do are 2 things

 

1. Tipping showing at check out with custom amount as an option

 

My Tipping is already set to on but when I go to check out, there was no tipping shown. Again this is online

 

2. Is it possible to setup just tipping without any purchase necessary, if so can anyone help me on how to do this

Solution

Hi there @arnieandfam.  Since some sellers do not ask for tips for online purchases, there is a separate setting page for this.  Go to your online dashboard > Online > Shared Settings > Checkout.  Scroll down until you see the Tipping section, and click the Edit tipping button.  Make sure that the toggle for “Collect tips” is turned on.  This will enable the section shown in the screen shot below on the “Your cart” screen after customers click to view their cart to checkout.

 

As to your other question, adding a tip without a purchase is not possible.  This has as much to do with card company’s regulations regarding tips as anything, so I doubt this will ever be changed without an act of Congress, and we all know that our Congress gets paid to do nothing these days.  I would recommend that you look into setting up a Donation item that customers can use online if you want to collect donations.  Just remember that these will not be added to any tip pool you might have and that they are considered taxable income to your business, by law, unless you are a non-profit.

So…. I was just reading some Square help documentation and learned something new today (after 10+ years!). In this help document, I see the following statement:

 

You can configure tipping for pickup, local delivery, and QR code orders.”

 

Note that tips for shipped orders is not included here.  That actually makes sense, especially since your operation seems to be a retail store where tipping is not usually a thing.  That brings up an obvious question — why are you wanting tips for these sorts of sales?  Are you trying to get donations (which might be the case since you asked about tips on zero-dollar “sales”)?  If so, then I will state again that you might be better off using a separate donation item that can be added to your online carts.

 

But, regardless, tips and shipping of retail items do not seem to be a current feature in Square.

Unfortunately Share Setting is not an option when I go to my dashboard, there is Setting > Checkout

 

Below is what is showing on mine as you can see the Collect tips is already on

@arnieandfam First, thank you so much for the screen shots.  Those will be very helpful.  I’m going to make one recommendation.  Can you unpublish your site and republish it?  You can unpublish it from your dashboard > Online > Website > Site Preferences.  Scroll to the bottom and you’ll find the unpublish button.  After you do that, publish your site again and see if that fixes the problem.  If not, come back here and let us know.  I’m going to tag @_Violet who is already following this thread.  Hopefully this fixes it.  If not @_Violet can follow up with the product team.

Our business are almost 100% online only and we had business previously where our customer wanted to give tip to our helpers thanking them for doing a good job packing their orders, this is the reason why I was hoping to be able to set the tip on online sales.

 

As for just the tip, there were quite a few customers that are not local who didn't really want to buy stuff and they just want to treat us to some tea or ramen.

 

I think I will go and work on the donation. Thank you again for all the help and how quick it was, I can say that some other places doesn't even come close with this kind of help 😀

This seems to be easy to solve. As tips are now tax free until 2028: Square listen up here... If young people know they can sell each other cheap items, let's say a 🛹. Let the kid make 30 bucks of fee free tip. This will be a calling for inclusion to the service industry and nonprofits and donation resources. 

     Furthermore, incorporating a simple tip button anywhere sellers need would be much more seamless/streamlined/liquid.

And take crypto tips. Why not?
