Categories vs Options & Variations

My wife is an artist and jeweler. We've been using Square for in-person payments for art shows and such for many years. I created the item library with 5 categories: jewelry, original art, prints, note cards, and journals. I'm now in the process of creating a Square website for online sales, and I'd love some insight from experienced users about how to set up items using categories/items/variations.

Earrings are easy. Each pair of earrings is unique, so I can easily post a pair of earrings and link it to a single item in my library. However, with the visual art, a single image may be for sale as an original piece of art, AND as a poster, note card, and/or journal.

Prior to creating the website, I had discrete categories for each item type. It seems like creating a single item based on image title might make more sense, and then create options and variations for it: original, print, note card, journal.

But I don't want to scrap what I've already built in my item library or lose the sales history I have that's all based on differentiating these item types by category rather than by options/variations.

Any suggestions/opinions welcome. Thanks!

Welcome to the Community, @retrofutures

To give you some piece of mind, any changes to your Item Library will not erase the history on your account.

Also, I want to make sure we're on the same page with what you're looking for too. Whenever you have a work of art - this has the options of being a canvas, poster, or journal. Is that correct?

It would be entirely what is easier for your business - you can create an item for the piece of artwork and have variations of the buying options.

Another option would be to create the items separately, then have specific categories to house the items.

I will keep an eye out for your reply👀
