Adding a physical modifier to a digital Item

Is there a way to add a physical modifier to the digital item and have the customer charged for shipping only if they select the physical modifier? 

Customer selects digital product = no charge for shipping

customer selects modifier for physical add on = charge for shipping

is that possible?

I don't believe you can sell a digital item and a physical item together.   Items that can be shipped or picked up in person need to sold separately.   You can sell digital items and physical items from your website however, what you have in mind won't work.   At least that's my understanding - maybe some other community members have some thoughts on this or a work around.

It wouldn't be possible to charge shipping on the checkout page, but you can add a price to the modifier itself. This would most likely only work for you if the cost of shipping is universal, i.e. flat rate.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that I do not believe it is possible to track inventory for modifiers at this time. 

The other option would be to sell the physical item, which would allow you to create shipping rules for the checkout page. And then add the digital item as the modifier with an additional price.
