Adding a custom drop down to the checkout

Can you add a custom drop down at checkout that is mandatory? 

I currently need to organize sales by schools or team. I currently have multiple locations but it would simplify if there was a way to just run one location and sort at checkout is that possible?

You can add a variation or modifier to the item. That way, when the item is added to the cart, it allows the buyer to select a school or team.
