v1 Square Register's Customer Display is stuck in "Customer Display Update in Progress"

Yes, I have a Version 1 Square Register. I paid $1,000 for it when I bought it a few years ago. Yes, I received the notifications that after September 1 of this year, the register would no longer receive software updates, but would still work as intended for me...

Fast forward to today, when the Customer Display is stuck in "Customer Display Update in progress". I have tried everything I could find:

both in the slot and with the USB cable

regular reboot

did a hard reset

 

I called Customer Service and was pretty much told to buy a new unit.

 

Is that seriously my only option here? When the register starts up, the Customer Display looks fine for about one second, and then goes into Update mode, with the spinning circle on the display and the orange message bar on top of the Main Display.

 

If anyone has anything else I can try, I would be grateful for any tips.
