how to pay off custom cash amount that is less than the total?

i am wondering if there is a way to pay off part of a tab. for example a customer has a tab of $222.22 and gives me $125 towards the total. i am unable to enter in the cash amount as anything less than the total. i can split items off but it is rare that they will be an exact amount. the same issue occurs when paying a single ticket with both cash and card. i am unable to enter a cash amount for anything less than the total. i have created a custom discount as a work around, but it messes up our books with creating discounts that arent there as well as cash coming in. am i missing something?

Square does allow you to make a split payment with a custom amount of cash.
