This past week our square stand gen2 v2 stopped accepting most cards using the dip reader. Contactless tap still works. As per my staff, about 1 in 25 or so cards so work, but doesn't appear to have any correlation with condition of card or card brand (visa/master/american etc).
It's not the end of the world since basically all cards can tap now, but it makes starting tabs (small brewery) a pain in the **bleep**, since the dip records cardholder name, tap does not, and typing it in slows service.
Obviously the AI "help" bot was useless, and the FAQs aren't really any better.
The unit is about 15 months old, so just outside of warranty, so any suggestions to get it working would be greatly appreciated.
to better describe the issue:
I probably have an old magstripe reader somewhere I can try out tomorrow, but this really doesn't seem to be an ideal solution.
Hi @Leveller !
First thing I’d check is to see if something got into the reader that’s causing cards to not get inserted fully. If that’s not the case, a hard reset of the reader *may* solve this, but more than likely the reader got damaged in some way which means a replacement reader will be needed.
As Ryan said, my first thought is that there's something inside the reader that is preventing a good contact being made.
If you have access to compressed air (can buy it in cans from PC stores), try blowing out the dip slot. You could also try using a toothpic to gently try to scrape out anything in there.
You mention it's in a bar, another thought is a liquid got into the dip slot and has corroded the contacts - that's not going to be an easy fix.
