Why is my Square Reader showing "Error card inserted" on my Square App?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Error card inserted.

My card reader is claiming that there is a card inserted, despite not having a card in it. I've tried restarting the square reader, deleting and then reinstalling the app on my phone, checked for anything stuck inside it, all to no avail. I'm wondering what else to do here.

Sorry to hear about this issue, @St_Clair!

If updating your device to its latest software version and installing the latest version of the Square app hasn't resolved the error message, I recommend that you reset your Square Reader:

  1. Charge your Square Reader for at least 20 minutes.

  2. While the Square Reader is charging, use a small object like a hair pin, pen cap or paper clip to firmly press and hold the button on the Square Reader for 20 seconds.

    • After 20 seconds, release the button and wait 10 seconds.

    • Press the button again to turn the Square Reader on and observe any lights on the Square Reader.


If the lights on the Square Reader turn on, you’re all set. If the lights don’t turn on, try again. Make sure to firmly press and hold the Square Reader’s button for a full 20 seconds.
