Square terminal won’t stay on after update and bios erro

I am upset. My warranty expired in December and a update froday messed up my terminal. It caused a bios error and will only turn on when plugged in. I called Sunday and was told someone would call to over ride the warranty and gave me a case number. No one called me at all! I called today and the lady on the phone told me to buy a new one or buy a terminal case for my iPad and tried to upsell

mw the expensive station. I just want my terminal fixed or replaced because the update friday caused it to have issues. The battery is fully charged but will only stay on when plugged in.

Hi @Cpassetto.  I’m sorry to hear about this.  Let’s see if we can get this resolved for you, or at least pin down the exact problem.

First, you need to factory reset your Terminal, while it is plugged in of course since it you say it currently won’t work otherwise. To do this:

  1. Tap ≡ More.

  2. Select Settings > Hardware.

  3. Tap General > About Terminal.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Factory Reset > Confirm Factory Reset.

  5. Tap Reset one last time. From here the countdown will begin and your Terminal will reset.

When that is done, power down your Terminal and unplug it.  Then try to power it back on.  If it powers back on, then all should be good.  If not, then this is most likely a hardware problem that is just coincidentally happened around the time of a software update, which does happen sometimes.  BIOS/POST errors are hardware related, not software.  They happen when the BIOS detects a hardware problem during boot up that keeps it from even loading Square’s software.  It is extremely rare, if not impossible, that a software update can cause these sorts of errors, though firmware updates can cause them sometimes.

I’ll mention that my two Terminals are up to date and working fine.  Also I’ll mention that there is an ongoing problem with both Square Terminal and Square Register that the engineers are working to resolve now.  But a fix has not yet been completed.  It is possible that your Terminal could be affected by this, too, though I can not be certain of that.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
