Square terminal is no longer accepting manual card entry.

My Square terminal is no longer accepting manual card entry. I have a customer that uses gift cards and calls in the info, but the terminal is declining them

@SueBrown Just to clarify, by gift cards you mean Square gift cards, either physical or electronic?  Are you able to key in the gift card number on your Terminal using the payment method of “Gift Card?” And after you key that number, it is declined?

At the risk of asking an obvious question, did you go to Gift Cards -> Reload card or check balance -> and key in the number to see if maybe the balance is insufficient?  (Again, sorry for the obvious question, but…..)

If you don’t mean Square gift cards but rather Visa or Mastercard gift cards, the decision to decline a transaction is made by the issuing bank.  Square has to do whatever they say.

Hi Chef. 🙂  The card is a Visa gift card. I know by the first four numbers. The customer is out of town and purchases the gift card, then calls us with the card info and then we ship product to him. We've been able to process the cards before, it just started  in the last week that Square is declining them.

Wow.  Every time something like that has happened to me, I’ve had to tell the customer to contact the bank who issued the card.  Square doesn’t actually make approval decisions.  They ask Visa, who asks the bank, and the decision is sent back to Square.  Since they are telling Square to decline it, they are usually the only people with all the information.  I’m not sure how much information goes from bank -> Visa -> Square, but I know it is minimal and usually doesn’t include a reason, but just a “no.”

One more thing I’ll suggest.  This is most likely a Visa debit card.  Is there any chance that his card might require a PIN all of a sudden, and not allow transactions without a PIN?  I’ve heard of this happening before, but I don’t know if it’s really a “thing” or not.

Lastly, you can contact Square Customer Success and see if they have any more information.  You’d only be able to get that information from them since they can’t discuss sensitive account-related issues here.

Sorry I can’t be more help.

Hi @SueBrown,

Sorry, you are having some issues processing the Visa gift card. If it declines it is coming from the issuer, Visa Gift Card. The customer will need to get in contact with them to get this resolved, but in the meantime provide an alternate form of payment.

If you do have any additional questions please let me know!

Hi MayaP.

I know the card is just the standard Visa gift card that you can purchase most places. The customer has contacted Visa through the number on the back of the card and has been told there is money on the card. Fortunately we haven't gotten rid of our old credit card machine - entirely different company that uses phone line - so we were able to process the card. BUT we had intended on going strictly with Square. This may cause us to reconsider
