Square Terminal and Square for Restaurants for Mobile Food Trailer?

We run a shave ice trailer and have been using the Square Terminal as our counter/window POS and a connected, logged in iPad to view orders under 'Reports' - that lets us have the ipad on the wall at where orders are prepared, but it's clunky - we have to wait for the order to sync from the terminal to the web, and then manually refresh the dashboard in order to view new orders.  I'm interested in still using my Terminal at the window with Square for Restaurants, and using the Square KDS app on the ipad so we can see incoming orders and close out filled orders.    I can't seem to find assurance that this will work.   Any thoughts/experience with this?   Many thanks for your help!

Hi @Sweaty_Yeti.  It works just fine.  Once you have configured your KDS, all orders (no matter their source) will be sent to your KDS for fulfillment.

 

You should be aware of one recent announcement by the Square KDS team recently.  On June 28, 2024 Square KDS will no longer work on iPads.  Before then you will need to switch to an Android tablet.  Here’s a link to that announcement.

Hey @Sweaty_Yeti, just to add to what Chip said….. 

 

On the terminal you can use either the standard app or the restaurant mobile app (as Chip said, all your orders will show on the KDS). There is currently a beta you might be interested in here where you can send your customers SMS updates from walk up orders.

It’s important to note the change to Android in a years time, so if you like the experience then you’d need to get an android tablet of some sort.

Thank you, both!   I'm wondering if you can help me a bit more...  I've got it set up and running *close* to how I'd like it, but could only get it running if I use Terminal only for card payments, take all orders through an iPad (for now...until Android required), and have the KDS running on a second iPad.    I'd prefer to just take orders from the Terminal directly - not the iPad that is sending card payments to the Terminal.   But can't seem to get that sorted out.   Any suggestions?

You'll need to reset the terminal/sign out..... then sign back in as your business. 

As you've got it set currently the terminal is set to 'connected mode'. When you sign in with your normal login details you'll be able to pick the standard POS layout or the resturant one and will be able to put your orders through in full on the one device 👍🏻
