The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: Archived Items
Hi All
There seems to be some unexpected behaviour with archived items that has cropped up.
We had a range of products previously that were set up as variations of a single item. We stopped stocking the range so we archived the item.
We subsequently decided to restock one product from the range so created it as a brand new item. However, as it was set up in advance of the product arriving, the barcode was not added to the new item.
The barcode was still in place on the archived item. We have now noticed that all sales of the product since it was reintroduced have been registering as the archived item (as the barcode has been scanned at the point of sale when purchase have been made).
If we search manually on Register or Stand, the archived item is not displayed, but once the barcode is scanned, it brings up the archived product.
We have corrected the issue now (by swapping the barcode between the items and setting the archived item to "no locations" to be sure!) but thought we would share this as (for us) this is not expected behaviour.
Thanks for reading!
Hi @filletandbone, thank you for bringing this to our attention!
I checked in with our Operations team to see if this behavior is expected and they said it is to be expected. An archived item can be sold if a barcode is scanned. It does not require the item to be Unarchived.
I appreciate you bringing this up though! Please let us know if you have any other questions in the meantime.

Hi @Sammie_C
Thanks for confirming. I'll be sure to remove all locations too if I want to truly archive an item.
All the best! Tom
