Hi. I have recently started trading and using the Square terminal. I find it difficult to use as the keys are so small for my clumsy fingers. (I hate texting and the keys are smaller than my phones!) My customers are having to wait while I try to enter the products etc.
I understand that I can pair an iPad with the terminal and then use the iPad to add items and then take payment via the terminal.
Is there a specific model year of iPad that I have to get? I don't need the stand, I just want to make sure that the iPad will sync with the terminal before I spend £000's on an iPad.
Hey @Saddlers2025 - good news, any will work!
The terminal doesn’t pair up with Bluetooth it goes through Square via the web so as long as they’re both connected to the internet it’s all good.
This does mean that you won’t be able to use that set up with offline payments but that shouldn’t be a stumbling block for you if you’re in a standard store type set up.
When you set them up together you just need to sign out of your account on the terminal and follow the prompts on the iPad to get them talking together 👍
Hi @Saddlers2025, I hope you were able to get this sorted out and that @Sam_400º s suggestions were helpful.
Here is the support link for connecting the terminal, and below are the steps to get started with your point of sale. As long as you’re using a compatible iPad, this feature should work. You can check the list of supported iPads here.
From the Powered by Square screen on your Square Terminal, swipe from the left-hand side of the screen.
You should see Checkout, Settings and Support.
Under Settings, you can configure your:
Wireless network
Display and sound options
Accessibility for talkback or magnification
Printer
Other general settings, including date and time, device names, and language.
I’ll mark this as the best answer for now, but please let me know if it doesn’t work for you. I’ll be happy to help find another solution.

Hey @Sam_400º Thank you very much for that info! I did try with a laptop but the terminal seemed to then be bypassed and not functional. It seemed to stuck with the Square symbol on the screen.
I'll try again with a tablet or iPad and see if i can work it out. Much obliged to you! 🙏
@Saddlers2025 yup thats what it’ll look like in standby. You can swipe from left to right ti get the menu.
if you sent a test payment it should light up for you.
Hello @Sam_400º, thank you so much for guiding this seller. I really appreciate your support! 🙌
