How long do square readers last? Is it normal to have to buy a new one every 2-3 years?

Our square reader just suddenly stopped connecting to square on an android tablet. Tried all the troubleshooting, and spent so much time on the phone with support (which just read out the help articles i already tried). Do we need to buy a new one every 2 to 3 years??

I have not had to replace readers very often,   but i depends on use.  

On the square register I have to replace the front screen/readers about every other year ($300).  They are used daily for 200-300 transactions/day.  The card reader physically becomes useless.
