With a recent update to software on the square register guest with gift cards on file need to know the exact amount on the gift card and they can only be ran for that amount on checks that exceed the gift card amount. If not it will just decline the gift card.
also when running multiple cards even if the guest is checked in after the first card is ran the customer directory comes up when you click on cards on file and you have to retype and find the customer again in directory
Previously we could select the gift card on file and it would let us know the remaining balance and then allow it to be charged and then move on the next one the guest had on file.
The only way to know amounts on gift cards on file is from the dashboard and so no team member working the register can know what amount is on the card to run it for.
In this going to be resolved or is it the new way. Like I said previous software versions this didn’t happen at all and everything was peachy keen, now it is just dark storm clouds if a guest has cards on file

Just circling back here after finally hearing from our product. They have enabled some changes on your account that will allow Gift Card balances to be displayed on the Customer's Profile on iOS during checkout (this feature is under development on Android, the operating system of the Square Register). After this change, you should be able to open a customer's profile and see the balance for each of their gift cards on file in the Payments on File section of the profile, but only on iOS for now.
They also had a couple of questions that would help us better understand the issue with processing a gift card without knowing the balance. Did the decline problem start to happen at the same time that the Balance display disappeared? Is this affecting all your devices or just the Square Register?
Just the square register is the only way we can process multiple gift cards, so yes on the register. It started with the big great updates that took place earlier this year when square announced the improvements for the register and the increase in CC charges. Sometimes the register would pull the exact amount off the card, sometimes you would have to look up and type in the exact amount. They both started at the exact same time as the update. Prior we could run the cards it would take the whole balance, and then take us back to the pay screen to select the next card on file.
