Feature Request: Consolidate same items on receipts *and* discounts in Transactions.

Yesterday I was answering a question here regarding the use of barcodes for checkout and I was running some tests with my Square Register and barcode scanner to ensure my answer was accurate.

To my surprise, I discovered a strange anomaly in the way Register handles multiple scans of the same item that are not performed sequentially: you end up with the item appearing on multiple lines (instead of being consolidated as "x QTY" for a single line item). For example, I'm selling single-serve cartons of milk in different flavors: Whole, Low-Fat, Chocolate, etc. If I scan a whole milk carton three times, I get on the Register display:

  • Whole Milk x 3

Ok, good. But after that, if I scan a chocolate milk carton and then another whole milk carton, I get this on the display (both my side and customer-facing display):

  • Whole Milk x 3
  • Chocolate Milk
  • Whole Milk

This is good because it shows the customers an accurate list of the items as they are being scanned in real-time. It would create confusion if the first line item (whole milk) incremented from x3 to x4 after the chocolate milk was scanned; even more so if it occurred after scanning quite a few other items. (By the way, it behaves the same whether the items are scanned or entered manually on the Checkout screen.)

But now for the bad: the items print on the receipt in the same haphazard order that they were scanned/entered during checkout. Which means you get a jumbled mess of a receipt that can look like this:

As you can see, this is really hard to read. It would make MUCH more sense if all the same Items/Variations were combined into single line items on the receipt, like this:

  • Whole Milk x 5
  • Chocolate Milk x 5

But that's not all. Here is where it really gets UGLY: take a look at the transaction screen. 😲

The transaction is so long I had to scroll and photograph 5 times to capture the whole thing. Every discount, even on the same items/variations scanned or entered at the same time, was listed individually. So five lines for the discounts on the Whole Milk, five lines for the discounts on the Chocolate Milk, and thirteen lines for the discounts on the donuts. With NO indication of which discount goes with which item. What a MESS!

This really needs to be fixed.

Our team is aware of this one and they are working on a way to have an option to disable itemized discounts (for Sellers that prefer not to have it like this) so you can see a single discounted amount at the end of the transaction instead of all the discounts applied per item.

Thanks again for this feedback.

I don't have a problem with itemized discounts. Especially when there's the possibility for multiple discounts (as in my example above), the itemized discount is useful for the customer (and seller) to see what has been applied to each item.

My problem here is:

1. Same items are not consolidated on receipts and in the transaction history. Scanning 3 whole milk, 2 chocolate milk, and then another whole milk should yield on the receipt and transaction history: Whole Milk x 4, Chocolate Milk x 2.

2. When discounts are itemized (as they are now), they should show in the transaction history grouped with each item (as they do on the printed receipt). Having a long list of individual item discounts at the end of the transaction (with no indication of which item each discount is associated) is insanity.
