We have this same issue on our Square Register. We're unable to take people's names or auto create a ticket number. so frustrating. updating does not work.

This usually means the Square Register is having trouble syncing with Square’s servers, so any changes stay only on that one device.
Here are a few things you can try to get back up and running:
Check your network: Make sure your Register is connected to a strong, stable Wi-Fi connection. If possible, try switching to another network to rule out local connection issues.
Restart the Register: Fully power it off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
Update software: Double-check that both your Square Register software and any connected apps are fully up to date. Go to Settings > General > About Register and look for available updates.
Re-sync your device: If you have another device connected to your Square account, check if it’s seeing the same error. If not, logging out of your Register and back in can sometimes refresh the connection.
Check firewall/security: If you’re using a business network, make sure no firewall or router settings are blocking Square’s servers.
