My restaurant is located inside a multi vendor marketplace. They are currently not using any kind of POS system, but that is about to change. They are switching over to Simple Consign.
We currently do not use barcodes for our market goodies like jams, casseroles, etc. It will speed up our line if we did use barcodes for our market. Our restaurant is fast casual, and people stand in line to order their food.
We will have to put their barcode on our products for the multi vendor market’s registers. Can we scan those barcodes if we put whatever number their POS assigns in our item details?
It would be nice to just use one barcode.
Hello! yes, you should be able to add any barcode into the item listing. When you are editing the item you can scan the barcode to add it to the listing or you can manually type it in. We use the barcodes that come on products and create our own for items that don't have barcodes. It sure speeds things up!
Hope this helps 🙂
To expand upon what @repopgifts explained, the way to add the barcode to your item is as follows:
1. Go to your Item Library and click on the item for which you want to add a barcode.
2. On the Edit Item page, scroll down to Variations.
3. If your item only has a single variation, then skip the next step.
4. If your item has multiple variations, then choose the variation that matches the product with the barcode you wish to add.
5. Click in the text entry box next for the SKU of the appropriate variation.
6. Using your barcode reader, scan your barcode. The barcode value will automatically be entered as the SKU for that variation.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 for any additional variations, scanning the correct barcode for the specific variation of each product.
8. Click the Save button at the top of the Edit Item page.
9. Repeat for the other items in your Item Library.
That's it! Now you have barcode values assigned (as SKUs) for each of your item variations. On the checkout screen, all you have to do is scan the barcode for each item being sold and it will automatically be added to the sales order.
If selling multiple quantities of the same item, then just scan it multiple times. For example, if selling 4 jars of raspberry jam, just scan the raspberry jam barcode 4 times. Your Square Register will not create 4 line items of raspberry jam; it will correctly record the sale as "Rasperry Jam x 4". 😎
However, if you scan items out of order, then you will end up with multiple line items. For example, if you scan a jar of raspberry jam twice, then scan a jar of strawberry jam, then scan another jar of raspberry jam, you will get the following on your register:
