Automatic credit card surcharges with debit cards

Considering using my square account and buying a terminal to process in-person card payments at an upcoming event.  Rather than charging a higher price for card usage, I planned to use the feature where I can have the processing fees automatically added to customer tickets. But website says it does not apply to debit cards.  If the debit card is an actual Visa or Mastercard will the fee add on?  If not, Square probably not an option for this usage.  Thanks.

@husker1144 This is not a Square restriction.  The card networks ONLY allow surcharges on credit cards and, even then, some credit cards (like gift/prepaid Mastercards, for example) can't be surcharged, either.  This will not change until our paralyzed government passes laws that allow sellers to surcharge debit cards, too.  So, you're not talking to the right people here.  You need to  be petitioning your congress person and senator.

That being said, this is just one reason why I'll never surcharge.  I find it simpler -- and more up-front and ethical -- to simply add 3% to my cost bases when determining my retail prices.  Yes, cash paying customers also pay the fee, but there's nothing wrong with that.  Customers pay for all kinds of things they never use.  For example, someone who never uses my restrooms still are paying for its upkeep as that is part of my pricing calculations.  I haven't "paid" a card processing fee in over ten years, and in all years I've even made a little profit from adding that 3% to my cost-basis.

@husker1144

I would second what @TheRealChipA said, I even considered adding the surcharge to offset some costs, but I believe it causes a bad image with the customer and backed away from it.  Yes you can now technically add surcharge in square (beta), there are definitely merchant and state regulations that you have to consider. My recommendation is to bake your cost into your pricing instead of adding it as a surcharge.

I've been excited about using this feature and I'm implemented it across my three locations. There is one inconsistency and injustice that Square should address: The automatic surcharge is apparently NOT applied to transactions where debit cards are used, even though all debit card transactions are processed (and fees are charged to the merchant) as credit transactions. This policy is not made clear in the documentation:

  • Surcharges only apply to credit card transactions. ACH, debit card transactions, tips, offline payments, and split tender payments can’t have surcharges applied.

This is not exactly clear because in reality there are no debit card transactions in Square; ALL card payments are treated/processed as credit transactions. But when a debit card is used, the surcharge is not applied and the merchant is still charged the same fee for swiping, dipping, or tapping as a credit card. This is contrary to the spirit of the feature, which is to offset credit card fees for the merchant.

It would be amazing if Square could address this.
