Square offers a variety of products to streamline a food related operation, but with so many options, it can be tricky to pick the perfect one. I’m quite experienced with Retail and POS, however when it comes to food I hear so many different stories about what works best. Screen sizes, Checks, Orders, operating systems etc etc…..
What Square product would you suggest for a new business starting a cafe that offers local delivery - order ahead - with a bricks and mortar store?
As someone who's been in the retail space too, I totally get the confusion — the food industry throws a whole different flavor into the mix! For a café with local delivery, order-ahead, and a physical store, I’d suggest going with Square for Restaurants paired with the Square Stand or Square Register, depending on your layout and need for mobility.
Square for Restaurants is designed specifically for food businesses — it handles table management, modifiers, coursing, kitchen display systems (KDS), and integrates smoothly with online ordering for pickup or delivery.
If your team prefers an iPad-based system, the Square Stand is a good entry point. But if you want an all-in-one setup with fewer wires and a built-in customer display, the Square Register is super clean and easy to use.
Also — don't skip the Square Online store. It’s surprisingly flexible for showcasing your menu and managing those local delivery orders. Super helpful if you're promoting specials like seasonal drinks or rotating bites.
Feels like building the perfect menu — you want just the right ingredients to keep things smooth, fast, and tasty for your customers and team.
I recommend the below, it's what we currently have setup as a cafe:
