We don't have sound on ours because the sound comes out of the headphone jack on the Ipad which has the swiper plugged in, and therefore no sound.
But we don't care about the sound because we have it tied to our receipt printer. And when an order is received, it automatically prints an order ticket on our receipt printer. So we go by that. When a receipt prints, we know there's a new order. I have it set to print the receipt 40 minutes ahead (which is our prep time) in the FOH. You can make the KDS in the kitchen print at a different time if you want.
If someone orders in advance though (like they place a dinner order at noon), the receipt doesn't print until the 40 minute window. This is only a problem if we run out of something. So when we are low on something on our menu and might have to turn it off online, we always check if there are any open future orders before we assess that we have "2 orders of wings left" or something like that.
