Tax Exempt Customers

Tax Exempt Customers

It would be incredibly helpful if there was a way to mark certain customers as tax exempt, so when you attach a customer to the transaction the sales tax would automatically come off. We have customers who need to submit tax exemption certificates, but there's no good way of marking those customers in that manner. Right now you'd have to manually go in and turn off the tax and this would definitely cut down on potential mistakes.

Yes.  Mark customers as tax exempt, plus a field for why they are tax exempt (educational institution, sale to another retailer, religious institution, etc) AND be able to report on this.  Not only is the customer automatically not charged but we can easily fill in our monthly state sales tax form.

Our store very much needs this feature! We do business with other businesses and non-profit entities as well as the usual customer. Mistakes have been made now and again where customers have to be called and orders have to be rerung. It would be so much easier if tax exempt rules could apply to customers' accounts. Our employees shouldn't have to remember every single tax exempt customer! (Custom fields for customers aren't visible when ringing up at the register.)  We definitely had this feature in Quickbook's POS.

We have customers (Non-profits, government entities, etc.) that should be tax-exempt. I have marked them as such on the Square Dashboard on their Customer Information (date of Tax-Exempt status) and I have added notes but when they get rang up on the POS the cashiers (any one of 5 we have) does not see the note that they do not get charged taxes.  And I am always getting calls from these customers reminding me they are tax-exempt.  Can you please make it, so they do not get charged on the POS.

This plus a reporting feature would be nice to incorporate.  Currently we are having to track when the sale was and information for the customer seperately for sales tax reporting which involves more chance of errors when time is worth so much in a small business trying to grow.

Hey @funnytown,

Thank you for your suggestion! We understand how helpful it would be to mark customers as tax-exempt and automatically remove sales tax during transactions. This would save time and reduce errors for businesses managing tax exemption certificates. We've shared this feedback with our product team for consideration. If anything changes, we will let you know!

This is an absolutely essential feature. It is far too easy to forget to remove tax from an order or forget that a customer is tax exempt. As a lumber yard, we deal with plenty of customers that are tax exempt and it is a huge pain involving refunding and re-charging if a mistake is made.

@MayaP
This would also save me hours! I sell regional native plant species to a broad array of customers, but many of them are government or otherwise non-profit entities that require tax exemptions (Think US Forest Service, universities, Environmental non-profits).
I constantly have these customers purchase through our online store only to need a refund for the amount in tax since I cannot refund the actual taxes. This means that I either leave these clients hanging or eat the loss myself.

The only work around I have found is to ask these customers to reach out to me when they want to place an order so that I can create an invoice with each item manually set to tax exempt. It's a huge inconvenience for me and the customer.

Ideally, there would be something in their customer profile that allows us as sellers to mark them as Tax Exempt, so that all purchases made through that customer account are automatically tax free. I imagine as sellers we would simply set up a Tax exemption application process to confirm Tax IDs and then we'd only have to make the adjustment once per customer.

I really hope that the team can accommodate this, I know it's been requested for quite some time, but the issue is making our daily work increasingly inefficient of late.

Has anyone found another POS system along the same price per month as Square that does this? We are getting ready to merge with another small business and this feature is really needed. I have Square now and would hate to move to something else but I’ve been reading the  feeds and this has been asked for since 2018. Not sure if it will ever be a feature.
