Refund to gift card instead of original form of payment

Would like to have the option of refunding a cc payment or split payment to gift card, instead of having to go back to original form of payment.
Our policy is Exchange or Store Credit - we need to ba able process all refunds to gift cards. This is a very common store policy as I’ve already paid fees for the customers purchase and if I return to their cc - I have lost money without a sale. But by applying to gift card, I’m keeping that customer and knowing they will be back because they have funds to spend with me.
Another example is a customer gets a gift and wants to return it for a later purchase - the person that gave the gift is going to get the refund, not the person who got the gift. This is very uncomfortable to someone who got the gift to ask the person who gave the gift for “their return”. That is awkward.

Hoping that helps with the importance of this feature.
Thank you!

I'd like to reiterate the importance of this option as well. I just had a customer return that I was not able to process because we could not locate the original gift card used for the payment. We NEED to have this option ASAP!

After 10 years of being with square, and 10 years of requesting that a split payment should be able to go back onto a gift card or other form of return payment of my choice, it is still not been not be accomplished.
I truly wish square would put this as a priority as this is my biggest complaint with square.
It is costly to use the unlink refund as an option as it does not fix my inventory, which then I have to take the time to go and do, but more importantly, I am paying sales tax on that item and with it not being “refunded” I will then have to pay the sales tax again when they come in to use that gift card.

it just doesn’t make sense, and is very frustrating!
