Online Ordering Upgrades

Square for Restaurants - Requests

1. Add an option under each item before 'add to cart' is completed for a customer to add an item note. Right now the only option is to add a note at checkout and those notes are often missed by the kitchen.

2. Uber has an option to request "single use utensils" or to not include then in the togo order, this is great for reducing waste and would like this option added to Square checkout.

Hi @sheissoyspicy,

Thank you for sharing these suggestions!

You're right, at this time, Square for Restaurants doesn’t offer a built-in option for customers to add item-level notes before adding an item to their cart through Online Ordering. Currently, notes can only be added at checkout. One potential workaround could be to create modifiers (e.g., “Special Instructions”) tied directly to specific items so they print clearly on tickets.

While Square Online does not currently offer a dedicated toggle for utensils, you may be able to create an optional item or modifier (e.g., “Include utensils” / “No utensils”) that customers can select during ordering. This can help reduce waste while still giving customers the choice.

In the meantime, I'll move this thread to our feature requests board for tracking purposes!

I agree it would be nice to turn on item notes for all items instead of having to create a text modifier for "special notes" and apply to every single item on the menu.

As for silverware, I can see the need. One way you could do this is by creating an "item" called silverware/plastic utensils/etc. and then create two variations, one could be "Include silverware" and one could be "no silverware needed".... Then possibly make it only visible for the  website, not POS or ordering profiles? It won't prompt people but maybe if you could create a section at the top of the menu for it?

Just my two cents of a temporary work around 🙂
