Offer to add Donation during checkout

I would like to have an option for customers to add a donation during the checkout process (similar to adding a tip).  We currently add it as a modifier to event registration items, but that becomes problematic when customers are adding multiple tickets to their cart and just want to donate $5, but that $5 gets multiplied by the number of tickets added.  We are a non-profit organization in support of a school and have had great success with the add-on donations, but our supporters have never just added the donation as a separate item to their cart.
