Please set unit cost as a permission set as associates need to be able to see an item or print a label from an item however not have access to the unit cost.
Hi @lux_pos, that’s an excellent feature request. We appreciate you sharing your business use case and why it would be valuable for you. If you know of any fellow Seller Community members who would like to see this built out as well, feel free to tag them in your post so they can share their thoughts as well! The more sellers chime in to the request, the more likely it is to catch our product team's eye.

I don't understand why it's not already a permission setting. Employees don't need to have access to item costs. This makes no sense that they can see it. It really limits the ability to have an employee check stock or do anything "item" related really. We started loading costs on items to try and take advantage of reports and such, but it's honestly become a hassle now because we can't let "any" employee work on inventory.
Even a simple "check inventory availability for a customer" allows them to view the cost.
PLEASE make this a permission setting to hide the cost field!!
Another comment asking for this feature! It's honestly super basic functionality that any retail business would benefit from.
I desperately need to start tracking inventory separately for my 2 locations (customer-facing storefront as well as nearby storage). This would be helpful for mutliple reasons, but the primary ones are 1) ensuring I have the proper contents insurance for each location and 2) knowing where to look for a product to restock the shelves / whether or not we're quickly able to grab it for a customer vs if we would need to step away to storage.
However, it appears the only way to allow team members to view the full inventory number is to allow access to the "inventory" tab, because the "items" section only displays stock available at the location the POS is assigned to. This doesn't even make sense -- when I worked in retail before for a company that had locations in 2 countries, we had the ability to see the inventory of all items at all storefronts so that we could sell an item to a customer and have it shipped from another store.
I don't want to allow access to the "inventory" tab unless unit costs and other features are disabled. I don't want staff to be able to add/modify items or discounts. And I don't want staff to view unit costs, because it makes things a bit complicated; it would easily seem unfair to staff to see costs that are artificially low to the true cost of selling it (since it doesn't include shipping and overhead).
Seriously, what is the point of having all these other inventory features, when I can't let a regular employee access it because I can't hide the cost of items.
Any closer to getting this feature added? Not being able to hide unit cost is a complete pain - either granting access to staff to private company information OR not giving them the tools to do their job effectively. Great choices you've given us Square. Do we have a date for it to be rectified?
I want my staff to be able to edit inventory, but not see the unit cost as it isn't relevant to them. Why this still is has not been actioned is beyond me as many businesses would be in the same boat, currently I have to edit all the stock myself 😞
