I'm looking to create an automatic discount for staff but only on selected items. It appears that I can only do one or the other? Does anyone know if its possible to do this?
Good question! At this time, Square’s Automatic Discounts feature allows you to apply discounts based on either a customer group or a category, but not both simultaneously. This means you can set up a discount that applies to specific items in a category for all customers, or a discount that applies to all items for a specific customer group, but combining the two isn't currently supported.
A possible workaround:
1. Create a new category for the selected items you want to discount. 2. Assign the relevant items to this new category. 3. Set up an Automatic Discount tied to this category and share the discount manually with your staff, ensuring they apply it during checkout.
Alternatively, if you'd like more flexibility, you can consider using manual discounts at the point of sale, which allow you to decide which items and customers qualify for the discount.
While this feature isn't available yet, we’re always looking for ways to improve. I'll make sure to pass on your feedback to the team for consideration in future updates! Let us know if you have any other questions. 😊
I must admit, I see this as an imporrtant feature. I too want to do a staff discount, but for drinks only, and wish I could set the permision so that the discount only applies to certain categories.
Also good for "special" customer discounts, as I want to do a loyalty style discount for good customers, but don't want to discount food the same amount as beverage.
I would also like for this to be a feature. We have multiple specific discounts for groups and would love to have the checkout process for our staff to be even more seamless by not needing to think about which discounts a customer is entitled to.
In order for our Product Team to continue to track the demand for this feature, I've moved this thread to our Feature Request board. We'll continue to track the feedback there, and this will encourage other Sellers to jump in to add their votes as well.
Just a reminder that moving a thread to the Feature Request board doesn’t guarantee it’s in our development pipeline, but it definitely helps to keep it on our team's radar. 🙂
I was able to figure this out from the comments above. I’m going by memory to see if I can retrace my steps.
create your categories, items, and group tags as normal.
create a new discount in your square dashboard that applies a discount to select items or categories.
open the mobile app and go to customers -> Groups and then apply that discount to the group.
when doing this at the register, look up the customer name as a new sale, scan items, and it discounts for that category will be applied while others aren’t.
Also adding +1 for this. We've got members who are listed in our Customer Directory that we want to give discounts to for specific categories, but not ALL items.
