Automatic Fulfilment of Digital Products / Downloads

Is there any news on the digital download for Square? There is an Australian thread which was at least 4 years old that has been moved into the archive but no updates provided. Frankly I find it indicative that Square wants to dismiss this matter given that the thread has been archived.

Send Owl is the preferred option but they have just introduced new pricing which is just ridiculous when converted to AUD from USD. I certainly can't afford or justify those fees for something which is for one of the product lines I provide.

I find it misleading that Square does not clearly, up front and in BIG LETTERS stipulate that whilst digital products can be listed on Square, delivery requires that you either email the customer or purchase the services of a third-party provider for instant digital fulfillment of the order. The ability to list a digital product implies that Square has the capability to deliver it because its basically nonsensical to offer the kernel of a service and then not actually do anything with it. Despite at least 4-5 years of users asking for it.

Hi @HM4M,

I completely understand your frustration around the lack of automatic fulfilment for non-physical online orders, like digital downloads. It's a pain point we know impacts a number of Sellers, and you're certainly not alone in feeling this way.

To address your point about the archived thread: archiving older Community discussions is a common practice across many online platforms. It’s designed to keep search results focused on the most current, relevant information. I want to assure you it’s not about dismissing past feedback or requests. Archiving simply helps prevent outdated threads from cluttering the search experience, while still keeping those conversations on record for reference.

Regarding your specific use case, this has never been a built-in feature of the Square Online platform. We've done our best to be upfront about this in our support resources, where we outline that the manual fulfilment of digital products is ultimately the responsibility of the Seller. We share all feedback on this topic with our Product Team, though to my knowledge, there are currently no plans to implement this feature.

There are third-party integrations, like Foxy.io or SendOwl, that can help automate some of this process, though we understand they come with added costs, and may not be the right fit for everyone.

While I do think this would be a valuable feature, it’s just not something Square currently supports. I hope this helps clarify where things stand today and what options are available if you plan to continue offering digital products through Square Online.

Note: I've moved this thread to our Ideate board to ensure better visibility and tracking.

I feel that if Square aren't going to do anything with digital delivery, despite this being the 21st century and digital delivery being a key part of most sales portfolios; the option to create a digital item should be removed.

The frustration of needing to integrate someone else and first figure out how they work vis a vis what you need; the complexity of understanding another provider some of whom actually duplicate a website offering alongside the download option and have a different set of fees to be considered alongside Square.

Square should just remove the kernel that is the option of uploading a digital item to the catalogue because _nothing_ flags when that item is created that it cannot be downloaded on purchase. That kernel implies the option of a something which Square just simply doesn't supply and also doesn't appear to be interested in doing at all.  Keeping it there allows for years of pestering and frustration from the community which go unsupported because the download option still doesn't exist. Square needs to make a decision about digital fulfillment and stipulate what it is. This limbo is disingenuous to all involved. IMHO.
