TLDR - Fixed amount discounts take off the amount for EACH item, instead of the subtotal when using Minimum Spend.
I have a ton of categories in the store, but I want to discount a single category of items in my inventory by utilizing a tiered sale. Let's say Plushies. You might have seen these sales: Buy $50 of Plushies and get $5 off. Buy $100 and get $15 off. Buy $150 and get $25 off. I often see this kind of sale storewide for a lot of stores in my mall.
When you create an automatic discount in Square's Dashboard, the example set for the user in the Minimum Spend section suggests that this is a pretty straightforward discount.
Set minimum spend
Require a minimum subtotal to qualify for discount (Example: Buy at least $50 and get $10 off)
However, if you use a Square Register and try this discount out, there are several misleading flaws or bugs in the way this discount works.
1. The $X Minimum Spend counts your entire cart, not just the category or subset of items you select in the Discount Rules: Category option.
2. Once you pass the threshold, it takes the fixed amount off EACH item in the category. This works in certain instances where you're doing bundle discounts and using Discount Rules: Quantity as a ruleset, but for a fixed $5 off $50 discount, it does not work the way you think it should.
3. Maximum Discount Value can only apply when using Percentage based discounts and is disabled for Fixed Amounts.
So in this scenario, if I add 3 items worth $22.99 each, subtotaling $68.97, I would expect to see $5 taken off the subtotal. But what I get instead of $15 taken off the subtotal (One discount for each of the three items), which might catch a store owner off guard.
It gets weirder. If I add 2 of these items for $45.98, then add in another item NOT in the discount rules, I can trigger the minimum spend and it will take $5 off each item, for a total of $10 off. You would think the minimum spend would apply to the Discount Rules, but it is cart wide.
So the worst case scenario would be: I can buy a $60 product that crosses the $50 minimum spend threshold (remember this disregards the discount rule set), then add in as many $4.99 products covered under the Discount Rules: Category, and they'll ALL be discounted down to $0.00 and be given away for free.
Square needs to give us additional parameters or allow us to use the maximum discount value WITH the fixed amount discount to cap the total so that the discount would essentially apply to the entire cart should the user want it that way.
OR The way the minimum spend section is worded needs to be better.
OR give us a toggle to apply the discount to each item in the ruleset OR to the subtotal.
In any case, Square please give us the ability to have this sort of discount in place. This is a commonly found style of discounting that we should be able to implement.
