I've done a search here and this was last asked in Jan 2020. Last time asked instant profile can not be deactivated.
It looks like this feature is still automatic and can not be turned off. Is this correct or can we be saved from our least favorite part of square POS?

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to turn that feature off 😞 Instant Profiles are customer profiles that are automatically created following a transaction. If a customer’s name is collected from their payment card and a matching profile doesn’t already exist within the Customer Directory, Square will create an Instant Profile. Future purchases made with that card will update the customer’s profile with new transaction details and other activity with your business.
You also have the ability to add or edit information in an Instant Profile. Instant Profiles appear in the Instant Profile group in your Directory and can be filtered by using the creation source filter and selecting Instant profile (via payment).

I hope I've got the news you wanted.....in my Square account I have the ability to disable Instant Profiles. It is configured in here: Square Dashboard (squareup.com)
There is a toggle to switch it on and off.
Let me know if this removes your least favourite part of Square!!!

Where is this option? I have followed your direction, but accessing the tab from PC computer browser, the option is not available? Would you be so kind to include a screen shot?
I really want to delete this option as it makes unnecessary duplicates and also interferes with my automations that are running form the square customer directory.

Any chance a future update would include being able to turn this feature off? It's creating a profile every time a current customer uses a different card, and profiles are created for people who are visiting from out of state and may never return. Is the solution to just keep merging? And ignore the profiles of people who won't be a repeat customer? Thanks in advance for any update info you have on this.

I suggest that you submit this suggestion as a feature request through Ideate. I looked through the Square Directory board and it doesn't look like this has been submitted yet by any other Sellers.
