Square Marketing Birthday Offer Automation

Hi there!

We are very new to the Square Marketing & Loyalty features, so I have a silly question... 🙈

When sending/creating an automated Happy Birthday email, we are only given the option to select ALL customers, not specifically customers with birthdays.  My question is: What happens with customers without birthdays when you create Happy Birthday emails?  I'm assuming Square is filtering out those customers automatically and doesn't send them anything, but wanted to make extra sure!

With my luck, it would mass email every customer (even those without birthdays inputted) the minute we create the automation 😂

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Thanks @sminteriors @for your question. Part of the automation includes an initial email to all customers in your list to submit their birthday for a reward when their birthday happens. At that point, Square Marketing will email monthly to those that have submitted their birthday that occur during that month.

Thank you for the feedback!

I did see the Birthday Collector automation too.

So you’re saying that even if we do not set up the collector feature, the Happy Birthday emails automation will still email everyone for their birthday info?

We are wanting to only collect birthdays from our loyalty program members and send the birthday offers to them, not everyone in our Square customer database. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

@sminteriors @erinreyehair there are two separate, independent birthday email automations.

One is the Birthday Collector email, that will send an email to every customer to submit their birthday, so you can get a complete list. The second automation is the Birthday Offer, that sends a coupon or offer to celebrate a customer's birthday. You can set up both, or just one. You cannot specify a group of customers to email, so it's all or nothing.

If a customer does not have a birthday added to your database, then they would not receive any birthday offers, since that is based on their date of birth for auto sending. You can manually request birthday data, or create a separate marketing campaign directed to just your Loyalty members, where you can ask them to reply, submit a form, or give their birthday when they next visit.

I don't think you can require collection of the birthday field, but you could offer an incentive like a coupon on special if a person gives you their birthday. Usually the incentive of getting a reward during their birthday is enough to entice customers to enter.

@erinreyehairThis says the email is sent 7 days before their birthday.

Depending on how often your customers visit your shop, you may want to extend the offer. If the offer isn't worthwhile to your customers and encourage them to visit, you could risk frustrating them. I've found that if I was generous with redemption dates, it encouraged more purchases and goodwill from my customers.
