Exempt Gift Card Purchase from Redeeming Loyalty Discount

I know this has come up in other posts, but with the holidays here gift card purchases are increasing and once again our loyalty members can redeem an earned discount for the gift card purchase - this reduces the cash in vs the card amount.  And since they can redeem an earned discount when using the card for purchase - they could earn two discounts against the original card sale.   

Gift Card Purchases must be exempt from REDEEMING loyalty program rewards.

Based on how you have your program type setup you can exclude gift card purchases from redeeming loyalty. I would check out this thread going into detail on how you can set this up. Exempt items from accruing points

If you set up a spend-based Loyalty program, you can exclude certain items or categories from accruing points. To do so:

1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard and navigate to Customers > Loyalty > Settings.

2. Select Edit next to the Eligible items and categories section.

3. Use the filter or search bar to locate items, and deselect any items you want to prevent from accruing points. Any items that are uncategorized will be located at the bottom of this list.

4. Click Done.

Correct - However physical gift cards are NOT an Item in inventory, they are sold by selecting "Sell or Check Gift Card" from the POS menu.  So they can not be excluded through the process you listed - which I do use to exempt certain service items.

So this remains with Square to correct.

Was this ever resolved? I am also in the process of trying to exclude gift cards from earning rewards points and I can not find a fix. 

I would also love to know if there is a way to offer store credit instead of putting a return on a gift card?
