Custom Email Marketing Automations

Why is there no way to customize the triggers for email automations?

I want to have an email go out when someone subscribes to my newsletter but it seems like I'm locked into just the automations that are available and can't customize what triggers the automation.

I second this. Although the automations provided are helpful, I'd also like to customize the triggers and logic behind my own automations.
