We’ve made some exciting new updates to the Square for Restaurants POS, including a unified orders tab, pre-authorized bar tabs, and scan to pay!
With Release Manager, you can turn on these new features today or at a time that works best for your business. This event took place on March 10. WATCH THE RECORDING to learn more about the new features, how they can help your business, and how to opt in.
Following the walkthrough, we’ll be hosting a live Q&A with the Square product team who will answer any of your questions and hear your feedback.
Learn more about Square for Restaurants new features:
✅ New Orders Tab
You’ll now have a single view of all your orders (dine-in, online, or delivery partner) that you can sort, filter, and search however works best for you and your team.
✅ Bar Tabs
No more stashing credit cards behind the bar. Easily preauthorize bar tabs and let customers pay by card or Apple Pay. This means quick, no-fuss checkouts for customers — and protection and security for your business.
✅ Scan to Pay
Free up tables faster and give staff time to serve more diners. With QR codes on receipts, customers can settle up without waiting for busy servers to drop off the check.
By attending this event, you authorize Block, Inc., its successor, affiliates, subsidiaries, assignees, and licensees to capture, record, and distribute the photographs and/or footage, including your voice, image, and likeness via any medium now known or hereafter devised, throughout the world, for any purposes whatsoever. If you do not wish to be photographed or recorded, please do not attend, or ensure your camera view is turned off. Thank you for your cooperation.

Looking forward to this event; does this now work with connected terminals and have the ability to turn off tipping on scan and pay for those of us who include a service charge?

Hey @SimonH — thanks for bringing this up! To my knowledge, this update does not work with connected terminals. I've raised this question internally and will get back to you with any information or workarounds as they're available. Appreciate your patience here.

Concerned I've seen several confusing notifications that this update is soon to be pushed on everybody, coming out of Beta.
Is this the case? And is the connected terminal issue sorted?

This is really concerning me too. In release manage on two of my accounts in UK it says public auto rollout starting 11th March.
My main concern with this is that any open bills on the system prior to the roll-out will be lost (that's my understanding and what I've been told by Square support). I've had no solution on how to resolve this either. A massive issue for us as we have Bills left open for rolling bar tabs. 😞
I find it baffling Square would general release a feature that they know will cause customers to lose access to data (open bills). Nobody of sound mind would do that so I'm hoping and praying they pause the rollout and build a fix to migrate open bills to work with the new Order & Pay rollout.

the scan to pay feature was so great to see until I realized that all charges through that feature have a higher processing fee + $.30 per charge fee due to it being counted as card not present. Bummer! You would think if they pay from their phone there’s a better security in tracking the charge than a plastic card someone may or may not actually own.

I too am upset about this as its still considered a "ECOM" charge. the whole card not present for online transactions is still mind blowing to me but card charges in general are still mind blowing to me as we are pass the part of charging the sellers for the "convenience" if anyone should be charged its the customer. they are the ones using it, we have to take it as it is the main form of currency now. just think if they were charged separately by the card carrier instead of us then card carriers could compete on the consumer level vs the service level. Oh to dream where the business didn't have to pay more to take a payment.

What I need to know is how to remove this from my device or how to make it so I can see all of the tickets. I won’t be able to use this feature without being able to give managers access to all tickets.

Are we able to opt of from these features? Not sure I want to incure an additional charge per payment by using the QR method for payment. In additional, currently each Server can see their own tickets only, while Managers have access to all tickets. I dont want to change that, or change permission settings.

Scan to pay is optional. you can chose to use or not use scan to pay in the device profiles settings.
ticket visibility seems to be working the same as before any permissions set before are carry over. they will see the multiple options on the side bar but only check they have access to will be visible.

We either - I noticed there is a tickbox in device profile to enable Payment by QR code, so I'm hoping we can uncheck that and it will remove the feature.
I think Square should just charge the agreed rate on the account personally.

Will there be a feature to schedule future pick up orders from the POS?

As a fellow pizza place, this is a big one for me. Talking to the Square Development teams they ARE pushing this update and it was going to be live in the next couple of months. It's tied into the new Order experience and you can setup workflows to treat all orders with the same functionality as online orders, including assigning a time. It'll fix so many things for us, including the KDS being usable again.

I believe so, yes! I’m UK and this is already available in release manager to enable now. It says it’s being rolled out automatically starting 10th March.

When I enabled the Order & Pay in release manager to to test, pre-auth for bar tabs wasn't available - so I'm wondering if pre-auth is going to be US only initially? I hope we get it soon as it would be amazing for us.

My concern is that square support have told me that ALL open tabs/bills need to closed prior to the update (even if it’s done automatically!). This is a huge problem for us as we have bills left open for regulars who have bar tabs.
Does anybody know if this will cause an issue? Or is it just a case of needing to update ALL devices rather than just testing it on one so the bills can update and sync properly? I’m hoping that’s the case 🙂

The open tickets go into a sort of limbo.
I switched to the new system and found this out.
I was able to switch back and then close those tickets out and then proceed switching again to the new system.
You should be able to move those bar tabs into “House” accounts before switching and not have any issues.
