Passcode - owner - how does it work?

New to Square. New to retail. New to message boards, lol. I’ll be at a Christmas craft show (new to craft shows). I’m going to fix my Square Terminal to a counter top in public view. I have slight data security concerns with public access. Does an owner Passcode address this? How does the Passcode work? Will I have to enter my Passcode when I power up Terminal? Will I have to enter it each time Terminal goes to sleep? Or for each sale?
Thanks very much in advance.

Hi there @JuanitaC,

Welcome to the Seller Community! 🤗

Great question, I'll be happy to provide some context here.

The main purpose of the Owner Passcode is that it allows you to override Team Member actions when their permissions don't allow them to do so themselves. You will be prompted to enter your passcode when performing secure actions, like logging into your pos app, cancelling a sale, or viewing account-specific information (Transactions, Settings, etc).

You can manage your Owner Passcode from the Account & Settings section of your online Square Dashboard by visiting Personal Information > Sign in & Security. From here, you can view and edit your Owner Passcode.

If you’d like to turn this feature on/off, simply log in to your Square Point of Sale account and visit Settings > Security > Passcodes and toggle Off.

I'd recommend enabling this option and seeing what you think before using it at your event.

As an alternative to the Owner Passcode, what I recommend is that you instead connect your Square Terminal to Square Point of Sale on your mobile device. This will allow you to ring up a sale on Square Point of Sale and let your customers pay on Square Terminal, and ensures no personal data can be accessed from your Square Terminal.

Give this a test run and don't hesitate to reach out to us with further questions!
