Looking at buying a square terminal for our local club to use for events and get togethers, does square charge a monthly subscription fee or are there just charges per transaction?

There are no monthly fees to use Square to process payments. It's free to create an account and download our POS app. We'll take processing fees on a per transaction basis.

If you're signing up as a club please also have a look over this article - the sign up process for NFP-based ABNs is a little different.
