Do I need to get a reader?

Maybe this is a silly question but I registered for square in order to take payments via my website

do I need to have an actual card reader if I want to also take payments through an app, in person?

Hey @HazelTAuthor, welcome to Square's Seller Community! There's no such thing as silly questions around here, it's what we're here for 😊

 

You don't necessarily need a card reader to take payments through the Square app, as we also facilitate manual card entry payments. To manually enter a payment on the Point of Sale app:

 

  1. Ring up a transaction by adding items from the Library tab or entering custom amounts from the Keypad tab.
  2. Tap Charge to process the payment. Note: If you’re using a mobile device, or your tablet is being used in Portrait mode (vertically), tap Review Sale > Charge.
  3. Tap Manual Credit Card Entry > enter the card number, expiration date, security code, and the customer’s billing postcode.
  4. Tap Charge.


Just bear in mind that Square's fees for card-not-present transactions processed via the Point of Sale app are 2.5% per transaction.
