Issue taking payment on customer appointment

We have been having an issue when trying to check out / take payment for a customer through the appointment screen.  It is happening randomly throughout multiple locations on both the desktop dashboard (using chrome) and on the Square for Appointments app so eliminating any device related issues.  The only way we've been able to get payment on those is to run the $ amount charge on the Virtual Terminal then zero out the appointment.  The issue (beside operational slowdown) is the appointments still remain open even if retrying to close out with a zero balance.  Has anyone else been having this issue?  I have reported multiple times to Square support with no resolution.
