I am from a school P&F and I am trying to set up a Square reader to accept credit card payments at fundraising events but I have run into this issue

Does anyone know if there is a work around? Could I use a parent's ABN but still direct the funds to the P&F's bank account? Would that work? Are there any other implications?

Thanks for getting in touch and sorry to hear your organisation is having trouble signing up with Square! At the moment the ABNs we are able to onboard for payments are:
Individual/Sole Trader (with or without an ABN)
Partnerships (with an ABN)
Companies (with an ABN)
Trusts (with an ABN)
We're looking into ways we may be able to onboard more ABN types in the future - many NFP, club and association based ABNs currently require additional regulatory checks and paperwork that our onboarding process is unfortunately not able to accommodate at the moment.
There is unfortunately no workaround at the moment - if you used a different ABN this would be a violation of our Terms of Service and applicable federal finance regulations, and any payments made would also be reported to the ATO as income for that ABN.
We do hope to have a solution running for more ABNs (specifically to support clubs, associations and NFPs) in the future and are actively working on a solution. Unfortunately not for now though.
In regard to this question, is there any plan to update this ability? I've been waiting for it to happen for almost 5 years. Square is simple and cost effective for small non-profits and we would love to get on board. You guys are losing a lot of business but not supporting the little guys.
