Beware of printed receipts, restaurant/cafe/bar owners or any business that accepts tips on the Square terminal.
Today (Sept. 8, 2021) my customers were noticing that their printed receipts were reflecting amounts that had their [$tip amount] charged twice to their cards.
Upon further inspection of our daily transactions from our end of the merchant portal, records showed that we were indeed NOT double-charging the tips. But for whatever reason, the terminal was printing out that we WERE double charging.
Just a heads up for merchants that may have customers raising their eyebrows at the discrepancies in the totals on their receipts... Square is **bleep** up. Again. What a shock.
And yes, I have and am currently still speaking to Square merchant support regarding this matter. Their sorry response was "have you restarted the terminal?"
How is that going to fix the fact that I have an entire days' worth of customers out there with receipts... that may potentially reference said receipt, question their totals, and we do one of the following:
Customer returns to the restaurant, asking for refunds of their double-charged tips that we actually did NOT double-charge.
[Do we refund them anyway? And then, in turn, lose that amount from our revenue from today?]
[Or do we try to explain to them the glitch in the Square system, and have them leave thinking that we are shady operators thus ruining my restaurants reputation that we have been building for the past 10 years?]
Square support seems to have ghosted me when I asked them how they planned to remedy this issue on the customer relations side.
can you post a pic of the receipt so that we can understand what your customers are seeing?
