Re: Can you use the square without adding an ABN

My business IS a sole trader.  So going by your explanation, the account should operate without an ABN, both legally and functionally.  However, apparently I cannot REMOVE my abn from the account.  I have just spent 2 hours on the phone trying to get an explanation as to why and NOBODY at Square can give me anything other than scripted responses and rhetoric.

Apparently, if an ABN is associated with an account Square reports to the ATO the transactions associated with that ABN. However, if there is no ABN, it reports the transactions to the ATO as "unknown".

So let me get this right, you can set up an account without an ABN if you're a sole trader.  But if you happen to be a sole trader who set up their account WITH an ABN, you can't remove it?  I would like a public response with a rational explanation as to why this is so.  If I cancel that ABN and it no longer exists, then what are you reporting to the ATO with? You're telling them that transactions are being made under an ABN that is now gone.  Meaning that SQUARE is then breaking the law.

Can't wait to hear your reasonable and legally accountable explanation Square.

Simply remove my ABN from the account.  It's not that hard.
