Dispute money debited twice

I have a dispute being worked on and the money has been removed from my account TWICE. Why is that happening?!

@Bssrats I’ve never heard of that happening.  You should gather up your information (transaction numbers of the duplicate debits, etc) and call Square Customer Success tomorrow during regular business hours.  They should be able to tell you if there is a problem and update you on the status of the dispute.

Customer service was a joke. I called them today. They claim the first transaction didn’t go thru so they re-ran it. But my bank shows two transactions for -$80 and no return or failure of the first transaction. So I’m calling my bank tomorrow to dispute it instead.

@Bssrats Most likely, this is something that happens all the time.  The first one was rejected by the bank, but the bank is still holding the money for three days (or whatever is called out in their contract with you).  It’s the same as pre-authorization.  It will drop off after x days.  I’ve seen this happen to people too many times to count.  Yes, you can and are within your rights to dispute it.  But by the time they get to it, the pre-authorization will have dropped off.

It may seem like a joke, but trust me it’s normal.  In a week this will all work out.  Unfortunately in the meantime you are out that money until the banks work it out.  Before you file the dispute it would be good to see if one of those two transactions is marked as either “pre-auth” or “pending.”  I’m serious when I say this happens ALL the time.

But you can do what you want.  I doubt Square is scamming you.  This problem is rooted in our archaic banking system.

Neither is pre authorized or pending. Both have cleared my bank already and I’m out $160 instead of just $80. One was done 5 days ago one yesterday. So fully cleared and removed from my bank already.

I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating experience, @Bssrats. While we're not able to take a closer look at your transactions via this public forum, we'd recommend reaching back out to our support team, who can escalate this if needed, if the charge hasn't cleared in a few day's time.

Customer support didn’t help when I reached out. They claim neither transaction went thru despite the money being gone from my account twice.
