Change Legal Name

Hi everyone!

Short & Sweet: Has anyone else legally changed their name (e.g. last name changed through marriage or divorce; trans person changing their name; etc.) and is frustrated by Square not being able to change it?

I'm hoping that if enough of us express a need for this change to happen, maybe it will speed up the process.

Context

I have recently changed my legal name but have learned that Square does not allow you to change your legal name and they can't change it for you on the back end. Why? I don't know. Banks, government offices, etc. can all make those changes but apparently Square is unwilling.

I was given two options:

  1. Transfer ownership of my Square account
  2. Create a new Square account

I have been trying to transfer the ownership of my Square account but it requires the exact address that was entered at the time of creating the account. I have come to learn that the form fields are incredibly picky (i.e. postal code format of A1B 2C3 vs A1B2C3 register differently; "Street" vs "St" register differently, etc.). I created a spreadsheet with all the different ways my address could have been written and the various combinations. It's over 100 different variations. With getting a 24-hour lock out after every three attempts, it would take over a month of trying 3 options every single day to get through all of them. I called Square support to ask if they could just tell me how I originally input the address - nope. They can only type it into their own form fields and confirm whether it was correct or not. I asked if they could change the settings to not lock me out after 3 attempts. No to that as well.

Obviously just creating a new account is not a helpful suggestion. I would lose my domain name (which I paid for), lose all of my site data, and would have to rebuild an entire store. It would be one thing if they could transfer the site and data to a new account, but it would all just be lost.

I would love to start a thread of people who would like to / need to change their legal name on their account. Hopefully if Square realizes how many people need this and are frustrated by the lack of options, changes will be made.
