Troubleshooting "Unknown Error" Message When Attempting to Sign Into Square Account

Hello, i have been published my website for my art around march of this year and i was able to upload and change my images for my items in my shop. I made some new display images to showcase my product more nicely and i was trying to sign in to change but i keep getting this message about an unknown error and try again, I asked support but i am getting no luck.

I refresh my cache, i tried another browser, i am lost and i hope to be able to get this fix so i an be able to change my images for my shop. this has been disheartening and frustrating, please help if you can.

I've reviewed your case, and it looks like someone from our Support Team replied to your email yesterday — so you may have already seen that response by now.

In the meantime, I’ll make sure your account is set up to be directed to our Phone Support Team when our lines reopen tomorrow at 6 AM Pacific Time. This way, if you call from the number associated with your Square account, you should be routed straight to their team, who can assist you in real time.

As for troubleshooting, since this is showing as an "Unknown error" rather than a "Wrong password" message, we’ll want to try a few different access steps. You mentioned clearing your cache and trying another browser, which is great, but could you also try logging in using an Incognito window?

We often find that "unknown errors" like this are caused by blocked cookies in your browser or device settings. When cookies are blocked, it can prevent you from completing certain actions, such as logging in or resetting your password.

To check this, we recommend reviewing your Privacy and Security settings to see if your browser may be blocking cookies, which can prevent certain actions from working as expected.

I am having this same issue. I've reset my password, cleared cache, etc. with no luck. I tried Chrome and can sign in fine. On Safari I cannot login at all. I tried a Private Browsing window and CAN get logged in so I'm not sure what the issue is. I also tried turning off and Safari blockers with no luck either. I guess I'm missing something? But why did this start doing this? I've logged in fine for years but now, nothing. Any help is appreciated.

 

UPDATE: Oddly I can log into this Community area just fine (same username and password).

Even after switching browsers and even adjusting cookie choice, it won't let me through to add my item images! 😭 I'm so lost.

When going to another page from that specific log-in, it won't let me, either.

This usually happens due to a browser cache issue, security flag on the account, or updated verification requirements. Try clearing your cache/cookies, using an incognito window or a different browser, and logging in without a VPN or ad blocker. Also check your email for any verification requests from Square. If it still shows “Unknown Error,” try from another device or network as it can sometimes be network-related.

Troubleshooting “Unknown Error” When Signing Into Square

 

This usually isn’t your website — it’s coming from either a browser issue, a security flag, or an account-side review on Square. Here are the most common causes and fixes:

 

1. Browser or cache conflict (most common)

Try:

 

  • Clearing your browser cache & cookies
  • Opening Square in an incognito/private window
  • Using a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
  • Turning off any VPN or ad-blocker extensions

 

 

2. Login security flag

If you tried signing in multiple times, Square may temporarily block access as a precaution.

 

  • Wait 30–60 minutes before attempting again
  • Make sure you’re entering the correct email + password
  • Try logging in directly on squareup.com (not through a saved bookmark)

 

 

3. Account verification update

Since your site went live in March, Square may now require updated verification.

 

  • Check your email for anything from Square about verifying ID, bank, or business info
