Does anyone else notice if you set a specific timezone in Reports->Sales summary and switch to Daily the graphs at the top of the report appear to reflect the set timezone, but the detail in the table at the bottom does not?
Example:
Being in PST (GMT-8) I had one sale after 4:00pm PST Feb 28th which is after midnight GMT so it should show up as a sale on March 1 GMT. If I change my reporting period to be GMT the summary graphs at the top of the report reflect this correctly however the detail of the transaction at the bottom says $0.00.
Welcome to the Community, @lehrian -
Could you give me some more business insight information on making the changes to your timezone for reporting? What timezone do you run your business in?
I will keep an eye out for your reply👀.
I run my business in pacific time. However, Square generates their 1099 based on GMT. This is so they can provide a consistent report for companies that have facilities in multiple timezones, understood, that makes sense. However, the reports they provide via Reports->Sales Summary default to the local timezone so when I enter my sales into my books my numbers in my P&L are different than theirs on their 1099. I figured the simple way to resolve this discrepancy this would be to enter my sales into my books in GMT and since they provide a feature to change the timezone of the reports this was going to be straightforward. The other benefit would be that I could change my bank deposit cutoff times and my bank deposits would then correspond to the values shown on the daily reports as well simplifying bank reconciliation. To explain this, 4:00pm PST is midnight GMT, so if I simply change my deposit cutoff time from 5:00pm to 4:00pm then my bank deposits will be cutoff at midnight GMT so they should also correspond to the Daily Summary report running on GMT. I would only have to remember to change this cutoff time twice a year when DST starts and ends. So then everything, bank deposit report, my P&L and the Squareup 1099 should all be the same. The only discrepancy would be deposits that occur on Monday from sales that happen over the weekend. All good so far.
However, when I created the custom reporting time period for GMT the detail from the report that I used to create the entry in my books is wrong. The summary in the graphs at the top of the report showed the correct dollar amount, but the detailed values at the bottom were wrong as you can see from my example report. My workaround is to use a report that I wrote from my order management system database that correctly cuts off the sales at midnight GMT and ignore the Summary report from Squareup since it is wrong. I only started doing this and have less than a week of data but it appears that it is working correctly.
Thank you for sending this over, @lehrian. I appreciate the business insight you've added and the workarounds you're currently trying.
Since what you're looking for would be a feature request. I would recommend posting this over to our Ideate Board, so our Product Team can see it. Not to mention - other sellers can add their voice too.
Hello Kassi,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, I appreciate it. This actually isn't a feature request but a bug report for an existing feature. I am following the instructions in this Squareup article https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/7192-set-up-reporting-hours to run the Daily Summary report based on custom reporting hours. One of the features of their custom hours is to select the timezone for the custom hours. I set up reporting hours for midnight to midnight GMT and ran the report. The summary data at the top of the report I posted shows between $200 and $300 in sales on March 1, 2023 and the sales occurred between 12:00 AM GMT and 2:00 AM GMT which is correct. However, if you look at the detail at the bottom of the report it shows Gross Sales of $0.00 which is incorrect. The report is not consistent with itself. It should be showing the actual dollar amount in the detail that is is showing in the summary graphs at the top of the report. Is there a formal way to submit a but report to SquareUp? I chatted with someone at SquareUp and they told me it was because February had 28 days and that the data would "catch up" in a couple of days. What?!?! Useless. The report is clearly wrong and their engineering needs to be notified so they can fix the report. I posted it here in the hopes that someone from SquareUp would see it, but I really don't know who monitors this forum.
