We would like to use the Clock-in Clock-out functionality to track employee hours. However, if we give any employee a passcode to clock-in and clock-in their timecards, they can also use the same passcode to access the POS Check-Out. The minimal base permissions granted all employees by Square is unacceptable. These minimal base permissions allow all employees to view past customer transactions, and even issue refunds to customers. We are only trying to automate the timecards, not give all employees access to the POS.
The alternative is to use Square Team app to do the Clock-in and Clock-out. But unfortunately Square allows employees to install Square Team app on their own devices and be able to Clock-in and Clock out from their own devices, without even having to be present on their worksite. This is suppose to replace the old fashioned clock-in and clock-out where employees have to punch-in on a physical card? How do you hold employees accountable if they can clock in and clock out without even being at work?
Hi, you can review Team Management Settings and How-To create Custom Permissions on the Square Support pages below.

I've read all the documentations, instructions, but it doesn't change anything for us. It comes down to the fact that even with Square Team Plus - the paid version of Square Team, there is no way to not give an employee access to Checkout if we give this employee a passcode to clock in and clock out. It is simply not possible to give an employee only the permission to clock in and clock out, period.

@mfj You can control the app clocking in and out under staff ---> shifts ----> settings ---->
The minimal permission set does not let staff do anything but ring in a transaction and take a payment. They cannot back out of a sale (if you set it up on the point of sale), look at transactions, apply restricted discounts, see detailed sales reports, etc.
I think you can do what you want without too much trouble, sometimes the permissions can be confusing because they are so customizable. It is a double edged sword at times, but I hope this helps.
