Zebra ZD411 NIGHTMARE - Please Help

I purchased the Square hardware bundle that included the Zebra ZD411 for label printing. I can get it to connect to my Mac but printing a 1.2" x 0.89" label comes out wonky over two labels. I've tried configuring all the settings and nothing helps. 

 

I've turned to trying to connect it to my Square Register (since it is supposedly compatible with it). All software up to date and, alas, I can't find the device to connect to whether it's through the Square Hub/USB connection or through bluetooth. 

 

Does anyone out there successfully use this printer for labels from Square?

The main problem I think your having is the Label Size.  Square through printing Labels is Limited to certain size labels for Printers.

You are trying to print on 1.2"x.89" labels which I do not believe Square supports.  When ordering your ZD411 from Square there is only 2 labels listed:

  1. 2"x1" Barcode Labels
  2. 2.2"x.5" Jewlery Labels (Barbell or Dumbell type)

Here are the Labels you can print to when trying to print Labels from the Desktop Dashboard, note the are only a few that show Zebra.

The below image shows the 4 Labels sizes that Square supports printing to with a Zebra printer.

Now if you want you can download the Zebra Designer Software if it is compatible with your Mac.   Then design labels in that software to print but not directly through Square with your current Label size.

Can you please advise on the fact that the printer won’t connect - bluetooth or hardwired - to my brand new register? I am up to date on software and started with making a printer profile and it still won’t appear. Very frustrated.

That’s odd. I’m not currently seeing any reports of disruptions. Just to check, which app are you using on the register, and what version is it running? Do you get any errors when connecting? If so, please provide a photo of what you are seeing.

Hi Maya - thanks for the quick response! I am running Square Retail (I have a plus subscription) on the Square register (not a tablet with an app). OS version is 5.57.0116. I've just re-checked for updates and am told that it is up to date. No errors when connecting via USB to the ZD411 printer, just not seeing the device at all for connection. I've also tried bluetooth and that isn't working (Keith (candlestore) kindly pointed out that it is said that connection to the printer is only available via USB so I perplexed as to why it is not popping up when connected to the Square hub).

When you connect a USB printer to Square it does not Automatically Pop up.  You need to go through the Square setup of a Printer.  

Try following these instructions for connecting your  Printer : 8246-connect-a-printer-to-square  

Then setup a Printer Profile for that printer :  8245-set-up-printer-profiles 

 

Since the 411 is a Label printer and not a receipt printer you would need to inform Square in the Printer Profile steps what type of printer and when to print to the ZD411.  You would not want all Receipts for example printing to the ZD411.  You also need the ZD411 connected to the Regeisters USB system for setting this all up.  I was confused at first as you said you were using a MAC and got it to work but was off.   

Try choosing the Zebra 1.2 x .85 label when setting up your Label printer.

How is it connected by Hardwire?   USB or Ethernet?

I do not have this exact printer nor connect my printers to Square by USB I use Ethernet to connect my printers if possible so more devices can connect to the printer.

If you connect by Ethernet you need to type in the IP address of the printer.  If by USB you need to go through the Printer configuration and Square should find the USB device.

Are you using Square for Retail the paid plan?   Since this is a Label printer and to Print Labels with in Square you need to have a Subsription plan like Square for retail or Resturaunts I believe.

If you read the circled areas in the image below Square will only connect this by USB since Bluetooth and Network are not listed.  Unless this page is out dated.  But it also shows you do Need the Square for Retail Subscription, which could be another reason it is not connecting, but I am not sure.

Hi Keith - thank you for your helpful responses! I've seen your name on multiple other posts and I thank you for taking the time with everyone to share advice and tips.

 

Noted on the size of the barcodes. We currently use 1" x 1.2" with our old POS system so I was looking for a comparable size to that. I just received 1.25" x 1" in the mail to try, so will report back on if formatting issues persist. I will also order 2" x 1" to try out. I have a feed issue with the Zebra printer as well where it prints across two labels instead of one so wondering if it can't handle the 1.2" x 0.89" size though it says it can online. 

 

I will also look into the Zebra Design Software for Mac - perhaps it will solve my issues. I will report back as soon as I have a chance to sit down and try everything again.
