How to set up inventory for individual items when selling by weight

I'm trying to set up inventory for our Beef sales.

For instance: We get 10 packs of Ribeye Steak from the butcher that weigh different amounts. We sell these ribeye steaks for $26.50 per lbs. I need to be able to put 10 packs in inventory and when I sale 2 packs it shows me there are 8 left in stock and be able to sell them by weight.

Hey @Dhawki,

Welcome to the Community.

If your business needs to sell items by weight, you can create items with weight-based units and connect a compatible scale to start selling with the Square app.

You can learn more about Selling Items by Weight here.

Square’s inventory management provides basic tools to keep a clear count of in-stock items in your item library. For items with inventory enabled, the stock count will update based on sales from the Square app, Square Invoices, and orders shipped through your online store.

Learn more about Basic Inventory Management here.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

What you are trying to do is Sell by lbs and keep inventory by the Item.  This is 2 different ways to keep inventory and theres no way to convert these as x lbs = 1 steak.  Math and rounding would be off in most POS systems.  This is how grocery stores do it, 1 package is X amount of $ for X amount of Steaks with each price being slightly different and pre priced.  Where all 10 pack family bundels are roughly the same price, within a $1 or so.

So what you could do is receive inventory by Count of 10 packs.

Weight them when they come in an place a price on them by price per lb.

Then when Customer comes up Scan a barcode or type in Ribeye Steak.  Then a popup will appear asking for $ amount.  Enter the price you put on before.

If you buy the steaks and you mix and match for the customer this would be a problem since you are trying to sell by item but price by weight.

I run into the same problem, I buy my ingredients by lbs, and selling the completed item by units.  This can be done in my accounting software but not in Square.
