You can not do this in Retail currently. Having said that, there are currently two beta tests going on to add this functionality to both iPad POS and to Restaurants. No doubt these two platforms were prioritized since they will use it more than Retail. Honestly, yours is the first post I’ve seen about wanting this functionality in Retail.
If you are so inclined, feel free to submit a feature request to the Retail Team here, requesting that once they get this released for Restaurants and POS, that they consider porting it to Retail. It would be a really good idea to give them a solid, real-world scenario where you see this would be useful not only for your shop, but for other retailers.
